Montepulciano is known for its excellent red wine. Wooden wine barrels are also used in an annual event, called Bravìo delle Botti, that takes place every year on the last Sunday of August. The challenge, between the 8 districts (called “contrades”) takes place along the main streets of the city: where the contrades challenge each other during the race for Bravio—a colourful banner with the city's patron.
During the race two strong men called “pushers” push a barrel weighing 80 kg along the path, about 2 kilometres long, up to the Piazza Grande, up hilly streets, while the residents of the town and visitors cheer for their favourite teams.
Antica Ruga is the Gracciano (contrade) with a green colorful flag as proudly displayed in our home so please cheer them on!
